Accounting is a course that introduces you to the basic financial principles, career opportunities, and computer applications necessary to understand income and expenses. Accounting II is designed to accommodate those students who have successfully completed Accounting I and who are interested in furthering their knowledge of advanced accounting concepts involving corporations, income taxes, and a variety of investment opportunities. Students will continue to use computers to calculate depreciation and complete financial statement analysis. During the first semester, students will get firsthand experience in business decision-making by competing in an eight week Montana-wide business simulation game. The SHS Student Bank School-to-Work project with Stockman Bank enables students to develop and apply a wide variety of work skills right during the school day. Along with the bank responsibilities, students will also get an introduction to personal finance including savings, loans, and investments. Business law is a class designed to help develop the ability to recognize legal problems in situations of everyday living. The class covers the sources of today's law, some of the most common crimes and torts committed by young adults, buying and insuring a car, renting an apartment, buying on credit, drug abuse, traffic violations, the right of police to search, the court system, a day in court, and more. Montana law as it applies to you and the situations stressed throughout the course. A host of outside speakers, seeing the court in action, and personal involvement of class members in a mock trail make this class an interesting learning experience.
Business procedures/technologies are a one year course, which includes business skills and knowledge for those students who plan to pursue a career in business. There are three parts of the program: the class itself, the cooperative program, and the vocational organization - Business Professionals of America. Skills taught in this class include: Desk Top Publishing, word processing, using Word, presentations using Power Point, job application, business communication, telecommunications, professional dress and grooming, human relations, filing, computer selection, a business plan, business skills and careers in business. In the cooperative program which is not required but is an integral part of the program, students work in offices within the community on a part-time basis and receive compensation, a grade and credit. Business Professionals of America, the vocational student organization, is also a vital part of the program and members are encouraged to take an active part in the club.
This semester course is designed to enhance economic citizenship through a study of the business and economic environment in which all of us live. This course is intended to be an introductory course for those students who are interested in the field of business. It gives students experience and confidence in making responsible business decisions. This course features consumer buying, income taxes, banking, budgets, credit, business careers, and employment seeking skills, saving and investing, computer skills, workplace expectations, business ethics, insurance, and more.
